GE will hand out $550,000 in cash prizes and a shot at an investment by GE and venture capital firms to winners of the Ecomagination contest for brilliant product ideas in renewable energy, power-grid efficiency and green buildings. Submit your entry by Sept. 30 with a clear explanation of your product (and a video, if you have one), how you dreamed it up, and a description of your team. Looks like there will be a couple thousand entries, so take it seriously if you’re in it to win it.
The prizes are $50,000 to the idea that gets the most votes from the public on the contest’s website and five pots of $100,000 each for entries that the judges deem outstanding examples of entrepreneurship and innovation. But the serious money is the $200 million that GE and the investment houses say they have to invest in companies that pass some rigorous vetting. GE will announce those business deals by November.
View and vote for competitors at this suitably imaginative display of the entries. Some of the vote leaders: the MicroFueler gas pump that makes ethanol out of garbage in the gas station while you wait and the Solar Roadways solar panels that are tough enough to drive on so every road can give something back to the grid besides gridlock. Got a better idea?
